Sno-Cones and Surgery

Sno-Cones
Last week I noticed an adorable little sno-cone stand popped up in the neighborhood.

I drive by it every day and think about how exciting it was to get sno-cones when I was younger. Especially in high school, it was the cool hang-out. So last Friday night after dinner Dan and I grabbed Sofia and Jax and took a stroll to check it out.

Sofia was going to experience her first sno-cone!

We practically had to force her to try it. I felt like a very pushy stage mom. But like most other food, once she did try it she liked it.

We threw all caution to the wind and chose CHERRY. Why not? I mean, she is wearing a white shirt and I did forget to bring a bib or a single baby wipe. So naturally, bright red cherry, it is.

Even though she seemed to like it, she actually was pretty disinterested in the whole thing.

For her it was far more interesting to play on the chairs.

and practice her best Joker face.

It was still fun. And it least we got to finish it ourselves. (It was sugar-free.) And if you were to ask her I think her favorite part of the sno-cone was the straw.

Surgery

As I mentioned in a previous post Sofia's Ear Tube Placement surgery was yesterday. We're really hopeful that this should minimize, if not eliminate, all the ear infections.

The surgery was at Texas Children's Hospital so I have to mention that the graphic design firm I work for designed their logo. This was long before I was around but nonetheless. It's one of the more recognizable works our firm has created so I'm pretty proud of it.

Anyway, her procedure was scheduled for 7:30 am which meant they wanted us there at 6 am. We left Sofia in her pjs and put her straight in the car. She had a blast in the waiting room. I felt a little self concious taking pictures because I wasn't sure how sensitive the nature of the other children's surgeries but I managed to sneak one.

They called us in and we changed Sofia into her very own set of yellow Texas Children's pjs. We got to take them home - woo hoo! (that's sarcasm)

I was most nervous about the general anesthetic part of the procedure but felt better that the Chief of Anesthesia would be with Sofia. I took her in my arms and passed her over to him and I felt so awful. She was crying now for the first time all morning and I couldn't help but feel bad for how confused and scared she may have been. The good news is that once they put the mask over her face she would be asleep within 30 seconds.

Not even 15 minutes later the doctor came out and said everything great. As we suspected earlier in the weekend she had developed another ear infection so her ear canals were already inflamed and red. It took her close to an hour to fully come out of the anesthesia - and she cried every second of that hour. She seemed confused and disoriented but slowly that all subsided.

Once she was home she was back to her old self. She had not eaten since the evening before so we promptly gave her a snack,

let her model her awesome new pjs,

and then she played and played and laughed and was just back to her old self right away. She took two awesome 2 1/2 hour naps!

Once Dan got home from work she was so well rested and happy and we were too exhausted to cook so we headed out to dinner. I decided to get her dressed up to match her mood and she added her favorite new pair of sunglasses.

"Look, Ma! It's the paparazzi!"

She's pretty attached to those things. She eats entire meals with them on. She's too much!

I couldn't believe that just that morning she was at the hospital. I'm so relieved it's over and I'm so blessed to have a healthy child!
